بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
ٱقْرَأْ iq'raRead بِٱسْمِ bi-is'miin (the) name رَبِّكَ rabbika(of) your Lord ٱلَّذِى alladhīthe One Who خَلَقَ khalaqacreated ١
Recite in the name of your Lord who created
خَلَقَ khalaqaHe created ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insānaman مِنْ minfrom عَلَقٍ ʿalaqina clinging substance ٢
Created man from a clinging substance.
ٱقْرَأْ iq'raRead وَرَبُّكَ warabbukaand your Lord ٱلْأَكْرَمُ l-akramu(is) the Most Generous ٣
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
ٱلَّذِى alladhīThe One Who عَلَّمَ ʿallamataught بِٱلْقَلَمِ bil-qalamiby the pen ٤
Who taught by the pen
عَلَّمَ ʿallamaTaught ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insānaman مَا māwhat لَمْ lamnot يَعْلَمْ yaʿlamhe knew ٥
Taught man that which he knew not.
كَلَّآ kallāNay إِنَّ innaIndeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ l-insānaman لَيَطْغَىٰٓ layaṭghāsurely transgresses ٦
No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
أَن anThat رَّءَاهُ raāhuhe sees himself ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ is'taghnāself-sufficient ٧
Because he sees himself self-sufficient.
إِنَّ innaIndeed إِلَىٰ ilāto رَبِّكَ rabbikayour Lord ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ l-ruj'ʿā(is) the return ٨
Indeed, to your Lord is the return.
أَرَءَيْتَ ara-aytaHave you seen ٱلَّذِى alladhīthe one who يَنْهَىٰ yanhāforbids ٩
Have you seen the one who forbids
عَبْدًا ʿabdanA slave إِذَا idhāwhen صَلَّىٰٓ ṣallāhe prays ١٠
A servant when he prays?
أَرَءَيْتَ ara-aytaHave you seen إِن inif كَانَ kānahe is عَلَى ʿalāupon ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ l-hudā[the] guidance ١١
Have you seen if he is upon guidance
أَوْ awOr أَمَرَ amarahe enjoins بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ bil-taqwā[of the] righteousness ١٢
Or enjoins righteousness?
أَرَءَيْتَ ara-aytaHave you seen إِن inif كَذَّبَ kadhabahe denies وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ watawallāand turns away ١٣
Have you seen if he denies and turns away -
أَلَمْ alamDoes not يَعْلَم yaʿlamhe know بِأَنَّ bi-annathat ٱللَّهَ l-lahaAllah يَرَىٰ yarāsees ١٤
Does he not know that Allāh sees?
كَلَّا kallāNay لَئِن la-inIf لَّمْ lamnot يَنتَهِ yantahihe desists لَنَسْفَعًۢا lanasfaʿansurely We will drag him بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ bil-nāṣiyatiby the forelock ١٥
No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock
نَاصِيَةٍۢ nāṣiyatinA forelock كَـٰذِبَةٍ kādhibatinlying خَاطِئَةٍۢ khāṭi-atinsinful ١٦
A lying, sinning forelock.
فَلْيَدْعُ falyadʿuThen let him call نَادِيَهُۥ nādiyahuhis associates ١٧
Then let him call his associates;
سَنَدْعُ sanadʿuWe will call ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ l-zabāniyatathe Angels of Hell ١٨
We will call the angels of Hell.
كَلَّا kallāNay لَا lā(Do) not تُطِعْهُ tuṭiʿ'huobey him وَٱسْجُدْ wa-us'judBut prostrate وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ wa-iq'tariband draw near (to Allah) ١٩
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allāh].
