Becoming Muslim should make you a better son or daughter, not a stranger at home. The Qur'an commands kindness to parents even when they do not share your faith; you simply do not obey them in disobeying Allah.
Asma' bint Abi Bakr asked whether to keep ties with her mother, who was not Muslim and came hoping for her kindness. He said: “Yes, keep good ties with your mother.” — Asked who most deserves good companionship, he said: “Your mother” three times, then “your father.”

“But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.”
