Become Muslim · a gentle start

Becoming Muslim, one small step at a time

Whether you are curious, close to deciding, or just said your shahada: welcome. This guide covers what Islam is, how to say the testimony of faith, what comes next, and — at the centre of it all — good character. Every hadith links to sunnah.com with its grade; every verse links to the Qur'an reader.

What Islam is

Islam means submitting to the One God — Allah, the same God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus — in trust and love. In a famous hadith, the angel Jibril came in human form and asked the Prophet ﷺ about the religion. The answer gave three levels:

Islam — practice

The testimony of faith, prayer, zakat, fasting Ramadan, and Hajj for those able.

Iman — faith

Belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree, good and bad.

Ihsan — excellence

To worship Allah as though you see Him; and though you do not see Him, He sees you.

At the core: there is nothing like Him.

“Say, "He is Allāh, [who is] One, Allāh, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4Tr. Saheeh International · quran.com

The shahada — testimony of faith

A person enters Islam by sincerely bearing witness — understanding and meaning it — to these two statements. It can be said in any language; the Arabic is traditional.

Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh

I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Many people say it at a mosque with others present, which helps with community support and paperwork (e.g. for Hajj). Scholars generally state that a witness or certificate is not a condition for it to be valid before Allah. needs scholar review

What comes after

Take a bath (ghusl)

When Qays ibn 'Asim embraced Islam, the Prophet ﷺ told him to wash with water and lote-tree leaves. Thumamah ibn Uthal also bathed before saying the shahada.

Start the prayer, gently

The five daily prayers are the next pillar. Learn wudu and the movements first; read from a card at the start if you need to.

A du'a for new Muslims

When someone embraced Islam, the Prophet ﷺ taught him to say: “O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, give me well-being and provide for me.”

Allāhumma-ghfir lī, warḥamnī, wahdinī, wa ‘āfinī, warzuqnī

Intention and character first

Deeds are judged by intentions. Your manners at home and at work are now part of your worship.

Good character — the central pillar

Good character — the central pillar

“I was sent to perfect good character.” Your new faith will be seen first in how you speak, keep promises, treat your parents and neighbours, and control your anger. We built a full page for this — 15 areas, each with a source, a Sira moment and a weekly practice.

Your first week and first month

A calm plan, not a checklist to feel guilty about. Each step pairs something to learn with one character goal.

This plan paces what you learn — it is not permission to delay the prayers. The five daily prayers are due from your first day as a Muslim. While you are still learning the words, pray at each time as best you can (reading from a card, or saying what you know) and ask a trusted local teacher what to do in the meantime. needs scholar review

“And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allāh standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.”

Questions people ask

Do I have to know Arabic first?

No. You can understand Islam and say the shahada in your own language. For the prayer, you learn Al-Fatihah and a few short phrases in Arabic gradually; Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Ask a local teacher about what to do while you are still learning. needs scholar review

“Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.”

What about my non-Muslim family?

Stay close and be kinder than before. The Qur'an commands good treatment of parents even when they do not share your faith, and the Prophet ﷺ told Asma' to keep ties with her non-Muslim mother.

“But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.”

Luqman 31:15Tr. Saheeh International · quran.com
Do I need to change my name?

Generally no. Scholars mention changing a name only if its meaning is objectionable. Many converts keep their name. needs scholar review

What if I keep making mistakes?

Everyone does. Turn back to Allah each time — He describes Himself as forgiving all sins for those who repent. Small, consistent steps are most beloved to Him.

“Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”

Do I have to tell everyone right away?

Your situation matters — safety, family, work. Many people share the news gradually and kindly. Talk to a trusted, balanced teacher about your circumstances. needs scholar review

Someone told me I must be very strict straight away.

The Prophet ﷺ said the religion is easy and warned against those who go to extremes. Learn steadily from balanced sources.
