Your first 24 hours — one calm companion
You do not need to become an expert tonight. Gentle priorities, where to get help, and how to meet common pressures. Educational support, not a ruling for your personal case.
Educational, not a fatwa.
Assalamu alaikum — peace be upon you
When someone embraced Islam, the Prophet ﷺ taught a short du'a of forgiveness, mercy, guidance, well-being and provision. You can learn it today in Arabic, or say its meaning in your own language while you learn the words.
Allāhumma-ghfir lī, warḥamnī, wahdinī, wa ‘āfinī, warzuqnī
“O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, give me well-being and provide for me.”
A clean page: when ‘Amr ibn al-‘As hesitated because of his past, he was told that Islam wipes out what came before it. Sahih Muslim 121
Priorities for the first day (not a guilt checklist)
A companion, not a scorecard. Skip what you cannot do safely or practically; come back when you can.
1 · Rest in what you affirmed
You entered Islam by sincerely bearing witness — understanding and meaning it — that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Many people say it at a mosque for community support; scholars generally state that a witness or certificate is not a condition of its validity before Allah. Paperwork is a separate practical matter. needs scholar review
2 · Wash when you can (ghusl)
Reports mention bathing when embracing Islam. Learn a simple complete wash from a teacher; until then, ask a local teacher what applies to you. Whether it is obligatory or strongly recommended is open for review here. needs scholar review
3 · Begin prayer gently — learning is not permission to postpone
The five daily prayers are the next pillar of practice Sahih al-Bukhari 8. Learning wudu and the movements takes time Sahih al-Bukhari 631. Ask a trusted local teacher what you should do *now* for each prayer while you are still learning the words — including whether you may read from a card. needs scholar review
4 · One character intention
Pick one: honesty · kindness · patience · guarding the tongue. Deeds are by intentions Sahih al-Bukhari 1 — how you speak at home and at work is already part of your worship. Open the character guide.
5 · Know where help lives
| Need | Go to |
|---|---|
| Wudu & prayer diagrams | Wudu & prayer |
| First-week lessons | Seven lessons |
| Heart heavy, anxious or guilty | Heart check-in |
| Al-Fatihah with meaning | Qur'an reader |
| Feeling behind already | Start again |
Common pressures, calm responses
“Do I have to tell everyone today?”
Your situation matters — safety, family, work. Many people share gradually and kindly. Talk to a trusted, balanced teacher about your circumstances; no single public rule is stated here. If telling people could be unsafe, see the safety-first path. needs scholar review
“Do I need to change my name?”
Generally no. Scholars often mention changing a name only if its meaning is objectionable, and many people keep their name. Ask a teacher about your own case. needs scholar review
“Do I need a certificate for Allah to accept me?”
Community certificates can help with belonging and later paperwork. Acceptance before Allah is discussed by scholars separately from paper. Ask a local mosque about certificates if you need one for a practical reason. needs scholar review
“Someone says I must be extremely strict starting tonight.”
The Prophet ﷺ said the religion is easy Sahih al-Bukhari 39 and warned that those who go to extremes are ruined Sahih Muslim 2670. Learn steadily from balanced sources.
“What about my non-Muslim family?”
Stay close and be kinder than before when it is safe. The Qur'an commands kind company with parents even when they urge what you cannot accept in faith Luqman 31:15. Asma' was told to keep ties with her mother Sahih al-Bukhari 2620. This site will never frame enduring harm as piety — see the family toolkit and safety first.
“I keep making mistakes already.”
Everyone does. Turn back each time — Allah forgives all sins for those who return Az-Zumar 39:53. The most beloved deeds are the consistent ones, even if small Sahih al-Bukhari 6464.
A simple evening close
- Say the new-Muslim du'a once.
- Read the meaning of Al-Fatihah once in the Qur'an reader.
- Choose tomorrow's first-week lesson — or rest.
- One kind act at home, even small.
